India-UK CETA Has Been Live for Over a Year. Are You Using It?

The India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement was signed on May 6, 2025 and entered into force immediately. It is the most significant bilateral trade agreement India has signed with a major developed economy in recent years, and one of the most commercially meaningful for Indian exporters across several key sectors.

Under the agreement, the vast majority of Indian goods enter the United Kingdom at substantially reduced or zero import duty. For sectors that previously faced meaningful tariff barriers, including textiles and apparel, leather goods, footwear, and gems and jewellery, the benefit is immediate. Indian exporters in these categories are now competing in the UK market on materially better terms than suppliers from countries without a comparable agreement in place.

The agreement has been in force for over a year. The opportunity is not theoretical. Every eligible shipment that reaches the UK without the correct documentation is a shipment where the commercial advantage goes unclaimed.

Using the agreement correctly is not simply a matter of knowing it exists. There are origin requirements that must be met, documentation that must be prepared to a specific standard for each shipment, and regulatory procedures that have evolved since the agreement came into force. Staying current with these changes is part of operating compliantly and competitively under the agreement.

The UK market represents a significant and growing opportunity for Indian exporters who engage with CETA systematically. Those who build the right compliance infrastructure now will carry a durable advantage over competitors who do not.

Provenance manages the full compliance process for Indian exporters under CETA and every other active India FTA. Our team handles eligibility, documentation, and filing so the agreement works operationally, not just on paper.
